Welcome to Encinitas, California.

As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 58,014. It is located about 40 km (25 mi) north of San Diego, and about 150 km (95 mi) south of Los Angeles. Encinitas is a beachfront town that is located north of San Diego off Highway 5. With an average daily temperature year round of 72 degrees and sunshine almost every day, Encinitas is synonymous with outdoor living. The town of Encinitas has six miles of coastline, 10 public beaches, eleven parks, and is marked by the Batiquitos Lagoon to the north and the San Elijo Lagoon to the south. The beach at the southern end of Encinitas offers world class surfing, and is also a great place for sunbathing and swimming. In addition to the usual beach activities, other things to see and do in Encinitas is visiting the Quail Botanical Gardens, the Friday Farmer's Market in Old Encinitas, and Sunday concerts at Moonlight Beach in July and August. Shopping is diverse in Encinitas, mixing quaint shops and restaurants in downtown with new shopping malls and plazas. Once known as the "flower capital of the world," visit one of the several nurseries in Encinitas open to the public. There is also a famous retreat located in Encinitas where people from around the world come to meditate as they gaze at the Pacific Ocean. With an annual street fair in the spring to Oktoberfest in the fall, you will never run out of things to do while visiting beautiful Encinitas!

Encinitas sets on the coastline of the Pacific Ocean and is embraced by the Batiquitos Lagoon to the north and San Elijo Lagoon to the south. The first inhabitants were the Indians called the San Diequitos, the La Jollans and the Diequenos. It was the Dieguenos group who were mission converts and helped to build the Spanish Missions. The City of Encinitas was founded over 100 years ago, and is now made up of five communities that boast their own personalities. "Historic Encinitas" fills the Highway 101 Corridor that parallels the breathtaking beaches and ocean. "New Encinitas" centers its attention on El Camino Real known as The Kings Highway, which was founded by the early missionaries from Spain. "Cardiff-by-the-Sea" is made up of quaint homes dotting the green hillsides over looking the sea and was named after Cardiff, Wales in 1914. "Leucadia" means a sheltered place, and is famous for its giant Eucalyptus trees that line its main thoroughfare on Coast Highway. "Olivenhain" (which means olive grove in German), boast plenty of open horse country, with beautiful pastures, and a rural way of life. Encinitas today is known as the "Flower Capital" of the world, and is one of the major suppliers of Poinsettias to the rest of the world. The City welcomes approximately 2000 tourist a month. Encinitas' diverse cultures, beautiful beaches, Quail Botanical Gardens, Encinitas Ranch Golf Course, championship surfing make it a residents paradise. There is no short supply of charming Bed & Breakfast lodging, world-class restaurants, and campgrounds along the coast. Take a scenic drive along the winding tree lined roads, or the Pacific Coast Highway and discover it all. Encinitas' six miles of beautiful coastline offer beaches to suit everyone. There are a total of six, with something different for everyone. Moonlight Beach has a snack bar, restrooms, showers, picnic tables, volleyball courts, watchful lifeguards, free parking, and plenty of sand for a day of sun loving, family fun. Swami's Beach , is best known far and wide for it's awesome surfing. Forever immortalized in the Beach Boys' "Surfing' USA. This is what they call the surfer's heaven. Bone yards Beach, which is perfect for people who enjoy secluded, out of the way spots. D Street Beach, has steep steps that lead down from the top of the bluffs down to the beach. This area is quiet and very private. Stone steps Beach which is a good place to head for if you're a fitness enthusiast who thrives on challenges like the killer stairs leading down from the bluffs. Check the timetables first, as the beach disappears at high tide. Beacons Beach, No alcohol, no lifeguards. And last but not least, is Encinitas Marine Life Refuge is an underwater park, perfect for scuba divers. The refuge includes the area from D Street to the southern border of Swami's and 600 feet seaward.
